About Maid Out Of Ice



Maid Out Of Ice is a global, hydro-feminist situated, radio-based program that incorporates participatory, performative filmmaking and broadcasting infrastructure in forming an effective pedagogical public forum, to bridge and communicate opaque knowledge separated by boundaries such as land-based thinking, information latency, and existing eco-social-political conditions. This radical initiative by Lin Ni, partners with LungA Radio School, University of Lapland, The Thematic Network on Arctic Sustainable Arts and Design (ASAD) of University of the Arctic, and is supported by Kone Foundation.


About Ni Lin

Through her long-term artistic research on Planetary Water, Lin investigates the evolving relationships between water, bodies, infrastructures, colonialism, and the more-than-human world. Her practice is rooted in embodied encounters with water, particularly through swimming and freediving. These experiences form an interconnected process through which sonic expressions, voice, moving image, text, performance, and installation emerge and transform into one another. Acknowledging her entangled ways of sensing, thinking, and making, she writes:

“I swim because my body requires it. I dive to inquire into my own depth within its conditioned environment. Swimming may produce a text. The text may become a film. The film may generate music. The music may become an independent composition. A dive may make something possible that you could not have written from a desk. Then a desk could become a portal into somewhere—where a part of your body is permanently etched in the memory of a moment.”

Ni Lin is a multidisciplinary artist, artist-researcher, musician, filmmaker, violinist, and multi-instrumentalist whose practice spans moving image, experimental music, sound, installation, participatory performance, writing, and fieldwork. She is currently pursuing a doctorate at the Faculty of Art and Design, University of Lapland, Finland. She holds an MA in Sustainable Art and Design from the University of Lapland and a RIBA Part 1 qualification in Architecture from the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA), London. Lin has presented her work through exhibitions, screenings, performances, lectures, and workshops at international artistic and research forums, including the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW), the UArctic Congress, and the Relate North symposium. Her I Am Salmon series has been exhibited at the UrbanApa Festival at the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki and the Research Pavilion at HIAP Augusta Gallery. Her short film The Water Dress (2022), which she directed and performed in, has been screened internationally. Her documentary The Water Carries Me (2024) was nominated for the Chi Po Lin Documentary Film Award in 2023. Other works have been presented at Haus der Statistik, Kunstkraftwerk, Helmut Space, Herðubreið Gallery, and Skaftfell Art Center, alongside independent festivals and international exhibitions.
